Finnish course in Hossa national park in August 20-24, 2017

Would you like to have a clear goal for your Finnish studies? Like being able to participate in a four day Finnish course in Hossa in August 20-24, 2017? My friend Saija and I are organizing  a course that combines nature, well-being and Finnish language. Everything will happen in Finnish, and in addition to hiking and biking in the nature, eating vegetarian food, doing yoga and spotting reindeer, we'll also a daily Finnish language workshop somewhere between or after the activities.

The course is not for beginners, but luckily you still have plenty of time to brush up your Finnish! The idea is that half of the participants are native Finns. They can either participate in the language workshops or take naps while you study.:)

We'll have more details later, but this is just for you to know if you want to plan your schedule well in advance. The course will start in the evening of August 20 and end in August 24. We'll be staying in Jatkonsalmen kämppäkartano, two people in a room. We'll update the price and other details as soon as we have finished planning the programme. Did you notice that Hossa is mentioned in Lonely Planet's article about the best travel destinations in 2017?

This is Saija's homepage. In addition to being a Finnish teacher, she is also a yoga instructor and a wilderness guide student.

Hi, I'll try to draw once again from your infinite pool of Finnish knowlegde ;). Some time ago I've stumbled upon verbiliitot. This page from Iso suomen kielioppi gives some examples, but does not explain all of them: http://scripta.kotus.fi/visk/sisallys.php?p=451

I think explaining them would make for a nice blog post :). I understand some of them, and some not. In particular I'm wondering about "olla tehdä". I've seen it at least twice in the book that I'm reading: "Tämä temppu oli vähällä heittää minut mereen" and "Ensin olin joutua epätoivoon".

My gut feeling is that it means "almost" or "about to", like "Ensin olin melkein joutunut epätoivoon".

Yes, olla + the basic form means "almost". Like "Presidentti oli kuolla lento-onnettomuudessa" doesn't mean that the president died but that s/he almost did. I don't know the name of this structure, but if someone does, I'd love to know it, too.:) Heikki Kangasniemi's book series Suomen kielen tikapuut has something about this topic, in Jatkotaso 1 or 2, if I remember correctly.

Hey thanks, however I have noticed words such as huomiottehan and tarkistathan in official buildings and formal mail. I wanted to understand that specifically. The post you mentioned gives me little idea, thank you.

Hei Caroline, I will definitely write a post about that topic soon. I'd translate it as "Make sure that.." or "Why don't you.." It's also very popular in certain people's Facebook update when they want to urge other people to do something.:)
