I am a teacher, entrepreneur and mother living in Hämeenlinna. I have a company called Kurkilaakso. (Kurkilaakso does not mean Cucumber Valley, despite what the machine translators say. Kurki is a bird, a crane.) I give Finnish lessons online for individuals and companies. I am a nature lover. I spend a lot of time in nature with my family: I walk, run, ski, snowshoe, pick berries and mushrooms. I also like birds. Maybe you'll find that out when you visit my website www.kurkilaakso.fi.

What kind of teacher are you?

I always like to see the students as individuals. I'm interested in what they like, what they can do and what language skills they need. I also think I am really practical. I like to teach grammar, but I'm always thinking, in which communication situation the student needs the structure. Like language teachers in general, I'm interested in different languages and I often ask students, how they express something in their mother tongue. I am also a French teacher, so French is the foreign language I know best. I also speak English and Swedish and I have studied Italian, Spanish, Estonian, Hungarian and Latin. I have experience of very different schools. I have taught Finnish as a second language in integration education, vocational school and in all grades of comprehensive school. The youngest pupils have been 6 years old and the oldest learners 60 years old. I am rich to have been able to teach so many people from so many countries!

What would you say to someone who wants to learn Finnish?

Don't give up! There are lots of new things in the beginning, but gradually you'll learn a new language system. You only learn to speak by speaking, so try to get new words into your mouth right away. Say them out loud, talk to a friend, a spouse, a child or even a cat. Read texts aloud. Ask your friends and colleagues to speak Finnish to you and speak Finnish to them too. Remember that mistakes are part of learning. Tsemppiä!

Kiitos haastettelusta, Leena-Maija!

Leena-Maijan yritys Kurkilaakso

Suomen kielen yksityisopettajia - Private Finnish teachers

<h3 style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; margin: 0px; position: relative;">About the author of Random Finnish Lesson:
<p style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: "Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13.2px;">My name is Hanna Männikkölahti. I am a professional Finnish teacher who gives private online lessons and simplifies books into easy Finnish.<span face=""Trebuchet MS", Trebuchet, Verdana, sans-serif"> Please read more in www.linktr.ee/hannamannikkolahti and follow this blog, if you want to be the first one to know when I post something new.

Random Finnish Lesson / Hanna Männikkölahtihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17290613323919293053noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-269693591087704863.post-24154495321323750952024-01-15T14:00:00.008+02:002024-02-03T07:52:49.417+02:00Selkokirjaryhmä Telegramissa

Kokeilen tänä keväänä jotain aivan uutta:

Tervetuloa Telegram-ryhmään, jossa saat vertaistukea (peer support) selkokirjojen lukemiseen! I've had to think about this a bit when simplifying novels into easy Finnish. In erotic and romantic scenes, the words are usually suudella and suudelma, and the rest of the verbs and nouns are for more casual kissing and kissing kids and animals.

Kissing nouns in Finnish

Suudelma

Suudelma is the standard Finnish word for a kiss. It can be any style or lenght, but it's usually between adult humans. I do not give a suudelma to my dog.

Suukko and pusu

I'd say that suukko and pusu are same kind of short kisses or pecks. For some reason, I usually use pusu. (Oh, if you haven't had Brunbergin Suukot yet, you should try them!)

Muisku

Muisku is a smooch. I'd say that when giving muiskus, people also let out some kind of a sound.

More kisses:

kielisuudelma, kielari - a kiss with a tongue

lentosuudelma, lentosuukko - a flying kiss, a blow kiss

poskisuudelma - a kiss on the cheek

Other relevant nouns:

suu - a mouth

huulet - lips

kieli - a tongue

poski - a cheek

kaula - a neck

niska - back of the neck

Kissing verbs in Finnish

Just one kiss:

antaa suudelma - to give a kiss

antaa suukko - to give a kiss

antaa pusu - to give a kiss

pussata - to give a kiss, to kiss each other

Multiple kisses:

suukotella - to give multiple kisses

pussailla - to give multiple kisses or kiss each other many times

Read more about frequentative verbs!

One or many kisses:

suukottaa - to give a kiss, quite often to a specific place such as poski, a cheek. I was thinking about some grammar table that I had on my laptop files (I wasn't using Google Drive until I learned about if from an American Skype student in January 2014), but wasn't able to share it with any students. I had also read a book called The Happiness Project, which encouraged to start a blog because "mastering a new technology boosts happiness." I thought about the name for a while, probably googled some platforms, and ended up starting a blog on Google's Blogger. Or perhaps all of them? The fourth part of the series, Numeroruuhka, was just published in easy Finnish!
