Mitä sitten? Mitä seuraavaksi? - Then what?
I don't know for sure, but I have this feeling that many people study like crazy to pass the exam and then forget about their Finnish studies. Usually the reason is that they don't have the time or the professional need to learn more, or that there simply aren't so many courses above the intermediate level. Also, self-studying is often more motivating if you have a clear goal to reach, but the advanced test is so difficult that you might feel that it's not very realistic to reach the level 5 any time soon.
Anyway, here are my tips for keeping up with Finnish even after you have passed the Yki.
- Find a friend who also wants to study Finnish. Set small goals and meet regularly.
- Find a Finn who wants to learn your language, and study those languages together.
- If your friend doesn't live in your city, study together via Skype or something similar.
- Remember that studying doesn't have to be boring and you don't need to be sitting inside in order to learn. Go for a walk or for a drink in Finnish. Or watch a movie, or go to a museum.
- Read a lot. If normal Finnish it too much, try selkokieli, easy / simplified Finnish.
- Ask for help with your Finnish. People like to help, if they know how to help.
- Watch Finnish tv with subtitles.
- In short, add more Finnish to your life and make it fun.
- Use Ykitreenit to see if you'd be ready to take the advanced level test, and go for it.

Good posting. But why should this Yki test be so important? I am learning Finnish because I like it. My goal is to speak it fluently. Not for the yki or another test.I am studying hard, very hard and my progress is going on every day. I wonder for what reason I should take the Yki test ...
ReplyDeleteI believe that one of the requirements of gaining Finnish citizenship is that you have at minimum a level 3 in the Yki test. Most people I know needed Yki for citizenship purposes. Plus, some jobs require you to have certain levels in Finnish and Yki test is the best way of proving that you have achieved that level.
ReplyDeleteApplying to school needed min yki3 or i should have written language test to show my finnish skill. Other reason what have written already, the finnish citizenship and for job. Not once was asked from me yki test result when i applyed somekind of job.😊
