Generic sentence in Finnish

Generic sentences are formed with a so called nollapersoona, which is basically a third person singular verb form without a pronoun. The most common verbs used in this structure are voida and saada. You can translate the sentences using for example one, you or I, or the verbs to be possible or to be allowed.

Saada

• Saako tämän jakaa? - Is it OK to share this?
• Saako tässä istua? - Is it OK to sit here?
• Täällä ei saa polttaa. - You cannot smoke here.
• Täällä ei saa ottaa kuvia. - You cannot take pictures here.
• Sitä ei saa kertoa kenellekään. - You cannot tell it to anyone.

Voida

• Voiko tähän jättää laukut? - Is it OK to leave the bags here?
• Voiko täällä uida? - Is is possible to swim here?
• Konserteissa voi tavata uusia ihmisiä. - You can meet new people at concerts.

Pitää or täytyä + another verb

• Mitä tähän pitää kirjoittaa? - What are you supposed to write here?
• Mihin tämä pitää laittaa? - Where do I have to put this?
• Kenelle tämä pitää antaa? - To whom do I have to give this?
• Tämä täytyy laittaa roskiin.  - This has to be put into the garbage. 
• Nuo täytyy korjata. - Those have to be fixed. 
• Jostain pitää aloittaa. - You have to start from somewhere.
