Finnish pronunciation workshop with Päivi Virkkunen and Hanna Männikkölahti on November 26th

Edit: Our next pronunciation workshop will be in March 26, 2026

Come practice Finnish pronunciation with me and my colleague Päivi Virkkunen!

Päivi is specialized in phonetics, so she is really good at teaching Finnish pronunciation.

Time, place and price:

  • Time: Wednedsay, November 26, from 19.00 to 21.00 Finnish time (UTC+3)
  • Place: Zoom
  • Price: 32 €
  • Sign up in Päivi's online store

Content of the Finnish pronunciation workshop:

  • The vowels y,ö and ä
  • Finnish h (a little different depending on the other sounds around it)
  • Finnish l (surprisingly tricky)
  • The ŋ sound (hiding in nk and ng!)
  • No aspiration! (k, p, and t are just k, p and t.)
  • Duration (long and short vowels and consonants)

How does it work?

  • Päivi and I will first model the pronunciation and explain how it's done, and then the students can practice with their microphones off. After that, you can ask questions, and then we'll move on to the next topic.
  • We will speak Finnish, but the slides are in Finnish and in English.
  • If you want, you can be completely silent and anonymous during the workshop, but you can also have your camera and microphone on and participate in the conversation.
  • Leave a comment, if there is something you want to ask about the workshop!

Sign up in Päivi's online store.

Practicing Finnish while traveling (A Finnish travel agency advertisement)

Mainos  / Advertisement: Matkapojat (A Finnish travel agency)

Do you already know some Finnish, but haven’t found the perfect Finnish course or a hobby in Finnish? Join a group trip!

I’ve joined the Adtraction program and have applied to promote Matkapojat’s travel services. Matkapojat Oy is a Finnish tour operator that organizes and sells a variety of trips both in Finland and abroad.

If you’d like to support me, use this link. The price of the trip stays the same for you, but I earn a small commission.

I especially recommend group tours and round trips because you can meet other travelers and practice speaking and listening to Finnish.

Next, I’m planning to organize my own group trip, specially designed for Finnish language learners. Where would you like to travel together?

Podcast-jakso Numeroruuhka-kurssista

Tein podcastiini pienen (kuusi minuuttia)  jakson toukokuun Numeroruuhka-kurssista. Voit kuunnella jakson

Voit myös lukea tekstin! :)

Jakson teksti:

Kurssin aikana on kaksi Zoom-tapaamista.

What is a book in easy Finnish?

I made a new video about books in easy Finnish:

If you follow this blog, you probably know what they are and why reading is such a great way to study Finnish. However, I know that there are many students who have never heard of selkokirjat, so that's why I keep posting about them.

It's not always easy to find time or motivation for reading, but luckily I have a course for you: Join Luetaan Numeroruuhka toukokuussa and read a book in May. :) The early bird prize is €35, if you sign up before April 1. After that, the prize is €40. I already have one person who has signed up, and there's still plenty of time before the registration ends on April 31.

One more video: Here's me showing how the Memrise course about Numeroruuhka works:

Using 'Superhabits' for studying Finnish

I'm going to take the intermediate YKI exam in Swedish this year. My goal is to pass it, and maybe even get 4s. Most importantly, I want to feel confident in my Swedish when I travel to Sweden next fall.

My newest easy Finnish adaptation Banaanitalo is about to be published very soon, and I’ll have some promoting to do among the Swedish Finns (ruotsinsuomalaiset). I'll be talking about the book in Finnish, but in other situations, I want to use Swedish instead of English.

What is Superhabits?

I just heard about this super cool habits website from my student who designed it, and I’m inviting you to use it with me! In short, you can set your own habits and decide how many times a week you want to follow them. You can keep your habits private or turn it into a friendly competition by sharing them with others.

These are my habits for studying Swedish. You can use the same habits tracker for Finnish.

Save the link www.superhabits.fyi to your bookmarks and to the home screen of your phone.

How my online reading courses help you finish books

Confessions of a language learner:

I borrowed an easy Swedish book from the library, but I never finished it.

I ended up renewing my loan several times, yet I still didn’t read it.

Why didn't I read the book?

The language level was suitable for me, and I know how useful reading is as a learning method.

These were the main reasons:

  1. The topic didn’t really interest me.
  2. I had no one to talk to about the book.
  3. Nobody cared whether I read it or not.

I returned the book to the library and realized that my online courses can solve all of these problems.

How my courses will help you finish the books

  1. I choose interesting easy Finnish books and create engaging course materials.
  2. You can discuss the book with me and other readers on Telegram and in Zoom meetings.
  3. Both I and the other readers care about whether you read the book!

My online reading courses

Here's a short video of me talking about the Yösyöttö series:

I'll be teaching on an intensive winter course soon, and I can't wait to read these magazines with my students! If you're interested in intensive summer courses, there's one here in Jyväskylä.

If you prefer to read something in selkokieli, take look at my post Things to read in easy Finnish.

Improve your Finnish pronunciation

My friends and collagues Mari Nikonen and Päivi Virkkunen will organize a pronunciation course starting on September 30. I asked Mari to write a short introduction about their course, "Tuutsä mukaan?"

Read more on the course page.

"Moikka! My name is Mari Nikonen and I’m excited to be a guest writer on Random Finnish Lesson!

Like Hanna, I’m a Finnish teacher, and some of you might already know me from my blog or my social media as Ask a Finnish Teacher.

In my years of teaching Finnish to adult learners, I’ve often noticed that there are two important things that are often a bit neglected or even missing altogether in Finnish courses: pronunciation and spoken language. These are both vital for both speaking fluently and easily understanding what you hear.

I’m excited to announce a new course on Finnish pronunciation and spoken Finnish, which I’m organizing together with Päivi Virkkunen, a pronunciation expert from Ääntämisklinikka. If you've ever found yourself hesitating before speaking Finnish or wishing you could sound more natural in conversation, this might be just the course for you.

This course is all about building confidence in speaking Finnish, and we’ll focus on everything you need to know about Finnish pronunciation, from the trickier sounds that don’t exist in many other languages (I’m looking at you, ö and y) to the rhythm and melody of real spoken Finnish. Also, we’re using real-world dialogues from our brand-new e-book, Tuutsä mukaan. Everything you learn in class will be immediately useful in your everyday life.

Who is this course for?

Whether you're a beginner who's got the basics down (A1) or an advanced learner looking to fine-tune your pronunciation, this course will be helpful. All the classes will be taught in English, so learners at all levels will always have the support you need to fully understand the material. The goal is to help you speak Finnish more fluently and confidently, regardless of where you are on your language journey.

What can you expect?

We’ll meet every Monday from 12:00 to 13:00 (Finnish time), starting on 30 September 2024. Over the course of 10 ive Zoom sessions, you’ll learn the key aspects of Finnish pronunciation but also get practice in using them right away with the dialogues, recordings and pronunciation exercises from Tuutsä mukaan.

The best part?

The e-book is included in the course price, so you’ll have everything you need to keep learning and practicing, even after the course ends. You'll have access to all the course materials for at least three months after our last session, so there's no rush—take your time to review and practice at your own pace.

Meet the teachers

Päivi Virkkunen is a phonetician, and an expert in teaching Finnish pronunciation. I, Mari Nikonen, am a Finnish teacher specialized in speaking, spoken language and listening comprehension. Together, we will guide you through each step of the learning process, helping you improve your Finnish in a supportive and encouraging environment.

The details

  • Price: 127 € (including VAT)

  • Language of instruction: English and Finnish

  • Level: CEFR levels A1-C1

  • Schedule: 10 live Zoom sessions, Mondays 12:00-13:00, starting 30 September 2024, ending 2 December 2024
