What's with the Finnish expression 'ei välttämättä'?

Have you seen or heard the expression ei välttämättä?  It means not necessarily.

  • Välttää is to avoid something.
  • Välttämättä is a ma infinitive in abessive, so literally it means without avoiding.

Example sentences with ei välttämättä:

  • Teidän ei välttämättä tarvitse tulla. - You don't necessarily have to come.
  • Tämä ei ole välttämättä ainoa oikea vastaus. - This is not necessarily the only correct answer.
  • A fun fact: in spoken Finnish, it's ei välttis.

You can also make an adjective and another verb from välttää:

  • The adjective välttämätön means necessary. (If you want to say unavoidable, that would be väistämätön.)
  • The frequentative verb vältellä is to avoid something multiple times, to keep avoiding.

Example sentences with välttää, vältellä and välttämätön:

  • Yritän välttää virheitä. - I try to avoid mistakes.
  • Vältteletkö sinä minua? - Are you avoiding me?
  • Onko tämä välttämätöntä? - Is this necessary?
  • Onko meidän välttämätöntä osallistua? - Is it necessary for us to participate?

Oh, what is the difference between these Do I have to come questions?

  • Onko minun pakko tulla? is the strongest because of the word pakko.
  • Täytyykö minun tulla? and Pitääkö minun tulla? are the same.
  • Onko minun välttämätöntä tulla? sounds the most formal because of the word välttämätön. :)

How to resign and get fired in Finnish

Here's a post about resigning and getting fired in Finnish. I was laid off once. It happened in March 2020, right before the pandemic lockdown. I was supposed to be a part-time teacher in my old school until May, but I guess since I was still on the trial period, it was really easy to let me go and save money. After a bit of a shock, I was happy to be able to focus a hundred percent on my private teaching again and let other people handle the surprise online teaching of groups.

Anyway, here's some vocabulary:

  • irti - loose
  • sanoa - to say
  • irtisanoa - to lay someone off, to fire someone
  • irtisanoutua - to resign, to sign off
  • saada -  to get, to receive
  • potku - a kick
  • saada potkut - to get fired (colloquial Finnish)
  • antaa potkut - to fire someone (colloquial Finnish)
  • erottaa - to fire
  • loma - holiday, vacation, a time off work

Sanoa itsensä irti = irtisanoa itsensä = irtisanoutua = to resign

  • Sanoin itseni irti. = I resigned.

Irtisanoa itsensä = to resign

  • Irtisanoin itseni. = I resigned.

Irtisanoutua = to resign

  • Irtisanouduin. = I resigned.

Saada potkut = to get fired

  • Sain potkut. - I got fired. (potku = a kick)

Irtisanoa joku = to lay off someone

  • Mun pomo irtisanoi mut. - My boss laid me off.
  • Minut irtisanottiin koeajan jälkeen. = I was laid off after a trial period.
  • Tulin irtisanotuksi. - I got fired. (A past participle passive in translative!)

Antaa potkut = to lay off someone

  • Mä annoin sille potkut. - I fired him.

Erottaa = to fire

  • Mun pomo erotti mut. - My boss laid me off.
  • Minut erotettiin koeajan jälkeen. = I was laid off after a trial period.

Lomauttaa = to furlough

  • Minut lomautettiin. - I was furloughed.

Finnish verbs that are very easy to understand (and some that are not)

Some verbs in verb type 4 are quite easy to understand, if you speak English or other Germanic language. Here's a small post about that topic, just for the fun of it.

Easy verb type 4 verbs:

  • joogata - to do yoga
  • surffata - to surf
  • grillata  - to barbeque
  • meikata - to put on make up
  • pumpata - to pump
  • chillata - to chill
  • printata - to print

However, these ones are not what you'd think they might be:

  • humpata
  • jumpata
  • ruinata

Here are the explanations:

  • Humpata is not to hump but to dance a dance called humppa. (To hump is nylkyttää. It's a dog thing.)

  • Jumpata is not to jump but to do any kind of aerobics or gymnastics type of sport. (To jump is hypätä or hyppiä.)

  • Ruinata is not to ruin but to whine in order to get something that you really want. (To ruin is pilata. However, this verb can also mean to ruin as Älä ruinaa mun vaibseja! is a sentence that I hear every now and then from my eleven-year-old.)

Expanding your Finnish vocabulary with Gettomasa rap songs

If you like Finnish rap, or if you have kids in Finland, you have probably heard of Gettomasa.

If you listen to the songs on Spotify, you can usually read the lyrics at the same time. Notice that depending of the source, the spelling might vary as in grindata/graindata or with other loan words from English.

I have a post about spoken Finnish, but understading rap lyrics might require more specific vocabulary. Urbaani sanakirja is great, and you might also want to check out the grammar of swearing in Finnish.

The words on the list are from these songs:

How to say the English -ed form in Finnish

Sometimes my students say things like Tämä on tehnyt Suomessa when it should be Tämä on tehty Suomessa. (This is/was made in Finland). Notice how Finnish has THREE different verb forms that can mean the same as the English past participle form of a verb. You know, the -ed form or something irregular.

  1. tehnyt is an active past participle
  2. tehty is a passive past  participle
  3. tekemä is an agent participle

Here are more examples:

baked

  1. En ole leiponut mitään pitkään aikaan. - I haven't baked anything for a long time.
  2. Tämä on leivottu rakkaudella. - This is baked with love.
  3. Tämä on kaikkien aikojen paras leipomani kakku! - This is the best cake I've ever baked.

written

  1. Oletko sinä kirjoittanut tämän? - Have you written this?
  2. Tämä on kirjoitettu kauan sitten. - This was written (has been written) a long time ago.
  3. Kenen kirjoittama tämä on? - Who wrote this? (By whom is this written?)

built

  1. En ole koskaan rakentanut mitään. - I have never built anything.
  2. Tämä talo on rakennettu 1960-luvulla.  - This house was built (is built) in the 60's.
  3. Tämä talo on isäni rakentama. - This house was built (is built) by my father.
