How to use the Finnish word 'mieli'

Mieli is connected to so many expressions in Finnish! Here are the first ones that came to my mind, tulivat mieleeni. 

Feeling, emotion:



Pleasure:



Expressing opinion:


  • Minun mielestäni se on näin. - In my opinion, it's like this. 
  • Mun mielestä se on näin. - In my opinion, it's like this. 
  • Mitä mieltä sinä olet tästä? - What do you think about this?
  • Olin ennen sitä mieltä, että.. - I used to think that..




Mind:


  • Mulle tuli mieleen yks hyvä juttu! - I just got a great idea!
  • Sinä olet minun mielessäni joka päivä. - You are on my mind every day.
  • En saa tätä asiaa mielestäni. - I can't get this thing out of my head.



Feeling like having something:


  • Minun ei tee nyt mieli jäätelöä. - I don't feel like having ice cream righ now.
  • Mitä sinun tekee mieli? - What do you feel like having?

In the way that


  • Se oli kivaa siinä mielessä, että minulla oli paljon vapaa-aikaa. - It was really fun in the way that I had a ot of free time.  

Other words derived from mieli:


  • mielipide, opinion: Mun mielipiteellä ei ole väliä. - My opinion doesn't matter. 
  • mieletön, mindless: Tämä on mielettömän hyvä kirja! - This is an insanely good book!
  • mielistellä, to butter somebody up, to ingratiate oneself: Luuletko, että saat kurssista paremman arvosanan, jos mielistelet opettajaa? - Do you think you'll get a better grade from the course if you butter up the teacher? / ingratiate yourself to the teacher?
  • mielistelijä, a flatterer: Kalle on kamala mielistelijä. - Kalle is a horrible brownnose / suckup.
  • miellyttää, to please: Et voi miellyttää kaikkia. - You can't please everybody.
  • miellyttävä, pleasant: Minun mielestäni hän on oikein miellyttävä nuori mies. - In my opinion, he's a very pleasant young man.
  • Hän on mielisairas. - He's mentally ill.
  • mielikuva, mental image, impression - En ole varma, mutta minulla on sellainen mielikuva. - I'm not sure, but that's my impression of it. 
  • mielikuvitus, imagination: Hänellä on vilkas mielikuvitus. - She has vivid imagination. 

Oh, here's a mieli-related Fingerpori comic strip. It was actually voted to be the best Fingerpori ever! And yes, it is a very tasteless joke.

I expected I wouldn't get the comic... but I did and that is lovely...

Do you know if mieli is also related to "mieluusti"(and of course mieluummin/mieluiten)?

Most likely. Think mieleinen and mieluisa and olla mieleen.

Also, the antonym of mieletön is mielekäs. For "having a mind", mielellinen is more likely to convey the meaning.

Thanks for this useful post. Please what is the difference between tuntuu and mieli? Can I say: Onko sinulla paha tuntuu?. Also, I will appreciate any suggestion that will help me to pass the next yki test, especially the Puhuminen yhmarataminen ja puhuminen.

The sentence that you suggested would go like this: Tuntuuko sinusta pahalta? - Do you feel bad?
