How can Finnish adjectives be intensified with a prefix?

How to say only, just and exactly in Finnish

I've noticed that sometimes Finnish learners say 'just' when they should say 'vain' (or 'vaan' in colloquial Finnish). It's understandable, because sometimes the Finnish 'just' does mean the same as the English 'just'. However, it's not always like that. 

vain = only, just

• Minä söin vain leipää. - I ate only bread.
• Colloquial Finnish: Mä söin vaan leipää. - I ate only bread. 
• Notice that 'vain' is vaan in colloquial Finnish. 

juuri = just, recently

• Minä söin juuri leipää. - I was eating bread just now.
• Colloquial Finnish: Mä söin just leipää. - I was eating bread just now. 
• Notice that 'juuri' is 'just' in colloquial Finnish. So here 'just' means the same in both languages!

juuri = exactly

• Se on juuri tämä. - It's exactly this one. 
• Colloquial Finnish: Se on just tää. - It's exactly this one. 

• Juuri niin! - Exactly!
• Colloquial Finnish: Just nii! - Exactly!

• Notice that 'juuri' is 'just' in colloquial Finnish.

Talking about distance in Finnish

Pää can be translated as a head or an end. The inessive form päässä is often used in distance-related sentences:

1. Kuinka kaukana se on?
2. Kuinka pitkä (matka) sinne on?
3. Se on aika lähellä.
4. Se on tosi kaukana.
5. Se on kivenheiton päässä. 
6. Se on kilometrin päässä. 
7. Se on puolen tunnin kävelymatkan päässä. 
8. Se on puolentoista tunnin ajomatkan päässä.
9. Se on kahden tunnin junamatkan päässä.

Pay attention to these examples: 

• The word before päässä is in genitive. 
• The weird number puolitoista is 1,5. 

Translations:

1. Kuinka kaukana se on? - How far is it?
2. Kuinka pitkä (matka) sinne on? - How long (of a distance) is it there?
3. Se on aika lähellä. - It is quite close.
4. Se on tosi kaukana. - It is very far. 
5. Se on kivenheiton päässä. - It's a stone's throw away.
6. Se on kilometrin päässä. - It's a kilometer away.
7. Se on puolen tunnin kävelymatkan päässä. - It's within half an hour's walking distance.
8. Se on puolentoista tunnin ajomatkan päässä. - It's within an hour and a half's driving distance.
9. Se on kahden tunnin junamatkan päässä. -  It's within a two-hour train ride.

How to kiss in Finnish

So many words to choose from! I've had to think about this a bit when simplifying novels into easy Finnish. In erotic and romantic scenes, the words are usually suudella and suudelma, and the rest of the verbs and nouns are for more casual kissing and kissing kids and animals. 

Kissing nouns in Finnish

Suudelma 

Suudelma is the standard Finnish word for a kiss. It can be any style or lenght, but it's usually between adult humans. I do not give a suudelma to my dog.

Suukko and pusu

I'd say that suukko and pusu are same kind of short kisses or pecks. For some reason, I usually use pusu. (Oh, if you haven't had Brunbergin Suukot yet, you should try them!)

Muisku 

Muisku is a smooch. I'd say that when giving muiskus, people also let out some kind of a sound. 

More kisses:

• kielisuudelma, kielari - a kiss with a tongue
• lentosuudelma, lentosuukko - a flying kiss, a blow kiss
• poskisuudelma - a kiss on the cheek

Other relevant nouns:

• suu - a mouth
• huulet - lips
• kieli - a tongue
• poski - a cheek
• kaula - a neck
• niska - back of the neck

Kissing verbs in Finnish

Just one kiss:

• antaa suudelma - to give a kiss
• antaa suukko - to give a kiss
• antaa pusu - to give a kiss
• pussata - to give a kiss, to kiss each other

Multiple kisses:

• suukotella - to give multiple kisses
• pussailla - to give multiple kisses or kiss each other many times
• Read more about frequentative verbs! 

One or many kisses: 

• suukottaa - to give a kiss, quite often to a specific place such as poski, a cheek. Then it would be suukottaa poskea and it can be one or many kisses.
• suudella - to give a kiss, or just kiss with somebody, or to kiss something

How to use the Finnish word 'kainalo' (an armpit)

The word kainalo is an armpit, but we also use it to mean a larger area under your arm in. I searched for kainalo in a couple of my easy Finnish adaptations, and this is what I found:

'Kainalo' in cuddling someone in your arms  

Juurihoito:

- Sari on hieno nainen.

Olen niin onnellinen sen kanssa,
ja meillä on hyvä olla täällä Ronnassa, Fadi sanoo
ja ottaa Sarin kainaloonsa.

- Sari is a fine woman.
I'm so happy with her,
and it's good for us here in Ronna, says Fadi
and takes Sari into his arms. 

Numeroruuhka:

Kun palattiin takaisin sisälle,
Paavo ja Terttu halusivat katsoa elokuvan.
Tehtiin popcornia
ja Enni käpertyi kainalooni.

When we came back inside,
Paavo and Terttu wanted to watch a movie.
We made popcorn
and Enni nestled up in my arm. 

'Kainalo' in carrying things under your arm

Numeroruuhka:

Istuttiin rauhassa lauteilla,
kun saunan ovi yhtäkkiä aukesi
ja Pihla astui sisään.
Sillä oli ämpäri kainalossaan
ja se oli pukeutunut valkoiseen kaapuun,

She had a bucket under her arm
and she was dressed in a white robe,
which turned transparent in the sauna humidity.

'Kainalo' as the body part under your arm

Ei kertonut katuvansa:

- Pidä kiinni! Siiri huusi ja tuli lähemmäs.
Aili havahtui hereille
ja näki, kuinka Siiri otti häntä kiinni kainaloista
ja auttoi ylös.
- En minä sinua tänne jätä, Siiri sanoi.

and saw how Siiri grabbed her under her arms
and helped her up.
- I won't leave you here, Siiri said.

I published my first post on August 5 in 2012, when my daughter was a tiny baby and I was on maternity leave from my job as a Finnish teacher in a vocational school and as a private teacher. I was thinking about some grammar table that I had on my laptop files (I wasn't using Google Drive until I learned about if from an American Skype student in January 2014), but wasn't able to share it with any students. I had also read a book called The Happiness Project, which encouraged to start a blog because "mastering a new technology boosts happiness." I thought about the name for a while, probably googled some platforms, and ended up starting a blog on Google's Blogger. And here we are.

(This is my very first post: https://randomfinnishlesson.blogspot.com/2012/08/tehda.html I have edited it at some point, and I should edit it again.) 

I'm happy that I chose the name Random Finnish Lesson, because it is very stress free, letting me publish whatever and whenever. I sometimes edit old posts and try to make sure that all the links work.

If you like Finnish rap, or if you have kids in Finland, you have probably heard of Gettomasa. 

If you listen to the songs on Spotify, you can usually read the lyrics at the same time. Notice that depending of the source, the spelling might vary as in grindata/graindata or with other loan words from English. 

I have a post about spoken Finnish, but understading rap lyrics might require more specific vocabulary. Urbaani sanakirja is great, and you might also want to check out the grammar of swearing in Finnish.

Talking about padel in Finnish

Here's a list of padel verbs and a collection of padel links in Finnish. Feel free to comment and help me make this post better. I haven't played padel yet, but I talk about the game a lot with one of my students.

Padel verbs (and other things that you might need when playing padel)

How to say 'just in case' in Finnish

Just in case is either varalta or suosiolla, depending on the situation. 

Varalta = Just in case, in a neutral way.

• Ostin varalta kaksi pulloa viiniä - I bought two bottles of wine, just in case. 
• Ota varalta sateenvarjo mukaan. - Take an umbrella with you, just in in case (it rains). 
• Otin kopioita siltä varalta, että joku unohti kirjansa kotiin. - I took copies in case someone forgot their book at home. 
• Notice that in some dialects, people say varulta or varuilta.

'Suosiolla' has this idea that things could or will go badly. When you say 'suosiolla', you have kind of given up. 

• Ostin suosiolla kaksi pulloa viiniä -  I bought two bottles of wine. Just in case, but I know that people will drink wine, and if I don't have enough, they'll be upset.
• Otan suosiolla sateenvarjon mukaan. - I'll take an umbrella with me because I'm sure that it will rain. 
• Siirretäänkö kokous suosiolla ensi viikolle? - Shall we postpone the meeting to the next week as it seems quite obvious that most people won't be able to come this week?
