Finnish words ending with 'io' and 'iö'

It's time for another word list! This time I've been thinking about words (they're always nouns) ending with 'io' or 'iö'. Televisio, radio, patio, reaktio,  funktio and fiktio are obvious loan words, but how about the others? How many of these do you already know?

8. siittiö - a sperm cell (siittää = to impregnate)
9. sikiö - a fetus (siitä = to be concieved)

I'm sure that many of you know that kirja and kirjasto mean a book and a library. The meaning of sto is usually a group or a collection of something.

 

Here's a list of Finnish words that end with sto or stö. If you know the root word, you might guess the derivated word. Feel free to share more words and translations in the comments!

Singular or plural stem?

If a short (one or two syllables) noun ends with an a, o or u, the sto is added to the singular stem. 

• kirja > kirjasto - a book > a library
• tieto > tiedosto - knowledge > a data file

You might need the plural stem with longer words and words ending with e:

• ohjelma > ohjelmisto - a programme > a software, a repertoire
• aine > aineisto - material > data

The words ending with i have either singular or plural stem.

• väki > väestö - a crowd > a population
• vuori > vuoristo - a mountain > a range of mountains

Words ending with sto aren't always groups or collections

Nouns derived from verb type 1 verbs:

• muistaa > muisto - to remember > a memory
• kestää > kesto - to last > duration
• estää > esto - to block > a block

...and  juusto is just cheese. 😊

Finnish words ending with 'e'

Terve! This post is about the Finnish words that end with the vowel e. Here are some examples:

• Kylpyhuoneessa haisee homeelta. - It smells like mold in the bathroom.
• Sinä et tarvitse uutta tietokonetta. - You don't need a new computer. 
• Kenen vaatteet nämä ovat? - Whose clothes are these?

The e doubles, partitive has two t's and there is a reverse consonant change: 

• Nominative osoite: Tämä on mun uusi sähköpostiosoite. - This is my new email address. 
• Genitive osoitteen: Olen kadottanut sun osoitteen. - I've lost your address. 
• Partitive osoitetta: Etkö sä tiedä sun omaa osoitetta? - Don't you know your own address?
• Plural partitive osoitteita: Miksi sinä et ole kirjottanut sun kavereiden osoitteita ylös? - Why haven't you written down your friends' addresses?

Everyday e-words:

• huone - a room
• perhe - a fmily
• vene - a boat
• hame - a ski
• herne - a pea
• terve - well, healthy
• kappale - a piece of something
• kone - a machine
• home - mold  (Read more about words that are both Finnish and English!)

These ones have a consonant change - a weak grade in the basic form but strong grade in the stem:

• taide - art
• tiede - science
• osoite - an address
• lomake - a form
• esite - a brochure
• näyte a sample
• kastike - a sauce
• tilanne - a situation
• tavoite - a goal
• vaate - a piece of clothing

Notice that many e-words derive from a verb:

• pyyhkiä > pyyhe - to wipe > a towel
• polttaa > polte - to burn > a burning feeling
• jättää > jäte - to leave > a waste
• katsoa > katse - to watch > a look

Kiroillaan! - Let's swear!

The swear words perkele (devil) and perse (ass) also belong to this group. Notice the swearing structure where you have the first swear word(s) in the genitive form:

• Perkeleen perkele!

Another classic is quite vulgar, but so often used:

• Tämä on ihan perseestä. - This totally sucks. (You can do the exact translation, right?)

Finnish words ending with 's'

How to handle all the different Finnish words ending with s?
I hope that this post makes it a bit easier.

1. Kysymys-words: usually nouns, often ending with us or ys, but also is and as.

• Basic form kysymys: Mikä se kysymys oli? - What was the question?
• Genitive kysymyksen: Unohdin kysymyksen. - I forgot the question.
• Partitive kysymystä: En ymmärrä kysymystä. - I don't understand the question.
• Plural partitive kysymyksiä: Onko kysymyksiä? - Any questions?

Nouns derived from verbs:

• ajatella > ajatus - a thought
• ostaa > ostos - a purchase
• vastata > vastaus - an answer
• kokootua > kokous - a meeting 
• rakentaa > rakennus -a building
• supistaa, supistua > supistus - a contraction
• yllättää > yllätys - a surprise
• herättää > herätys - a wake-up
• raiskata > raiskaus - a rape

Spoken language words:

• roskakori > roskis - a trash bin
• kämppäkaveri > kämppis - a flatmate
• best friend > bestis - the best friend
• pehmytjäätelö > pehmis - a soft ice cream cone
• julkisuuden henkilö > julkkis - a celebrity
• tavallinen henkilö > tavis - a regular human being; not a celebrity

Other nouns:

• hauis - biceps,
• ananas - a pineapple
• lihas - muscle
• kasvis - vegetable
• jänis - a hare
• teräs - steel

2. Kallis-words, usually adjectives, often ending with as or is.

• Basic form kallis: Tämä on liian kallis. - This is too expensive.
• Genitive kalliin: Miten sinä olet ostanut näin kalliin puhelimen? - How come you've bought such an expensive phone?
• Partitive kallista: Ruoka on tosi kallista Suomessa. - Food is really expensive in Finland. 
• Plural partitive kalliita: Luomutomaatit ovat kalliita, mutta hyviä. - Organic tomatoes are expensive but good.

Random adjectives and nouns:

• kaunis - beautiful
• rikas - rich
• rakas - beloved, dear
• raskas - heavy
• liukas - slippery
• kohtelias - polite
• valmis - ready
• ruumis - a body
• hammas - a tooth
• rengas - a ring , a tyre
• lammas - a sheep
•  allas - a pool
•  varvas - a toe  

Adjectives with the ending kas/käs, which implies that there is a lot of certain quality:

• seksikäs - sexy
• lihaksikas - muscular
• iäkäs - elderly
• trendikäs - trendy
• älykäs - intelligent
• laadukas - with good quality

Notice the possible consonant change:

• Sinulla on liukkaat varpaat. - You have slippery toes.

3. Rakkaus-words, usually ending with two vowels and s.

• Basic form rakkaus: Rakkaus on lumivalkoinen. - Love is snow-white.
• Genitive rakkauden: Kuka keksi rakkauden? - Who invented love?
• Partitive rakkautta: En voi elää ilman rakkautta! - I cannot live without love!
• Plural partitive rakkauksia: Paul ja Ringo olivat elämäni rakkauksia. - Paul and Ringo were the loves of my life. 

Words in this group are often derived from nouns or adjectives:

• totuus - truth
• ystävyys - friendship
• avaruus - space
• kylmyys - coldness
• kuumuus - hotness
• raskaus - pregnancy
• kauneus - beauty
• kirjallisuus - literature
• salaisuus - a secret 

4. Ordinal numbers that end with s.

• Basic form kolmas: Minä olin kolmas! - I was the third!
• Genitive kolmannen: Saanko ottaa kolmannen? - Can I take a third one? 
• Partitive kolmatta: Etkö ole tavannut sen kolmatta vaimoa? - Haven't you met his third wife?
• Plural partitive kolmansia: Ei minulla ole kolmansia talvikenkiä! - I don't have a third pair of winter shoes!

Finnish words ending with 'in'

These words are often some sort of tools or machines, and they are usually derived from a verb. Actually, a lot of times they are homonyms with the first person singular past: pakastin means both a freezer and I froze. The basic form of the verb is pakastaa.

The four important forms of avain, a key

• basic form avain: Kenen avain tämä on? - Whose key is this?
• genitive avaimen: Mihin mä olen laittanut mun avaimen? - Where have I put my key?
• partitive avainta: Et tarvitse avainta.- You won't need a key.
• plural partitive avaimia: Oletko nähnyt mun avaimia? - Have you seen my keys?

In plural form, the e disappears before the i

• elative avaimista: Haluaisin teettää näistä avaimista lisäkappaleita. - I'd like to have extra copies made of these keys. 
• adessive avaimilla: Mihin näillä avaimilla pääsee? - Where can you get with these keys?

Be aware of the possible consonant change

• Minulla on uusi levysoitin! - I have a new record player!
• Mistä sinä ostit tuon levysoittimen? - Where did you buy that record player?
• Meillä ei ole levysoitinta. - We don't have a record player.
• Onko teillä levysoittimia? - Do you have record players?

Common Finnish words ending with in

You may already know puhelin (a phone) and kirjain (a letter as in abc), but how about these ones?

Keittiössä - in the kitchen:

• pakastin, kahvinkeitin, leivänpaahdin, sauvasekoitin, sähkövatkain - a freezer,  a coffee maker,  a toaster, a stick blender / an immersion blender, an electric mixer

Toimistossa - in the office:

• teroitin, viivotin, rei'itin - a sharpener, a ruler, a hole punch (Notice the cool spelling with the apostrophe!)

Autossa - in the car:

• kytkin, kaasupoljin, varashälytin - a clutch, an accelerator pedal, a burglar alarm

The superlative forms of the adjectives also end with in

...but that's another story and the declension follows a slightly different pattern. (Instead of in >i me, it's in > imma, in case you wonder.)

• huono: Tuo oli vuoden huonoin idea! - That was the worst idea of the year!
• kallis: Tämä oli kallein suklaarasia, minkä löysin Prismasta. - This was the most expensive box of chocolates that I found in Prisma.

Finnish words ending with 'nen'

Just like Finnish has verb types, we also have noun types. That matters when you have to add an ending after a word, because sometimes the word stems change. This post is about nouns that end with nen. 

 Nouns ending with nen:

• nainen - a woman
• ihminen - a human being
• lautanen - a plate
• leipominen - baking
• siivoaminen - cleaning 
• nukkuminen - sleeping  (Check out my post about making a verb into a noun!) 

 Adjectives ending with nen:

• punainen - red
• sininen - blue 
• keltainen - yellow 
• valkoinen - white
• iloinen - happy
• surullinen - sad 
• onnellinen - happy
• erikoinen  - special, kind of strange
• erityinen - special, exceptional
• ensimmäinen - the first
• viimeinen - the last 
• kreikkalainen - Greek
• helsinkiläinen - a person from Helsinki
• yksinkertainen - simple
• kaksinkertainen - double (Check out my post about the long adjectives!)

Notice the strange partitive: suomalaista, naista, yksinkertaista

(The nen in the end becomes s, and then you add the partitive ta. ) 

• Rakastan suomalaista kahvia! - I love Finnish coffee!
• En tunne tuota naista. - I don't know that woman. 
• Tämä on yksinkertaista. - This is simple. 

Otherwise, the singular stem ends with se.

• elative: Tykkäätkö suomalaisesta ruoasta? - Do you like Finnish food? 
• adessive: Mun suomalaisella kaverilla on bileet. - My Finnish friend has a party.
• essive: Pidätkö itseäsi suomalaisena? - Do you consider yourself Finnish?

Four important forms that are worth memorizing by heart:

• nominative suomalainen: Minä olen suomalainen. - I am Finnish.
• genitive suomalaisen: Tänään on suomalaisen musiikin päivä. - Today (8.12.) is the Finnish music's day, the day of Finnish music.
• partitive suomalaista: Älä pakota minua kuuntelemaan suomalaista musiikkia. - Don't force me to listen to Finnish music. 
• plural partitive suomalaisia: Onko sinulla suomalaisia kavereita? - Do you have Finnish friends? 

Common plural forms: 

• nominative: Suomalaiset ovat täällä! - The Finns are here!
• genitive: Olin ulkona mun suomalaisten kavereiden kanssa. - I was out with my Finnish friends.
• partitive: En ymmärrä suomalaisia miehiä. - I don't understand Finnish men.
• adessive: Miksi suomalaisilla hevibändeillä on niin paljon faneja Saksassa ja Etelä-Amerikassa? - Why do the Finnish heavy bands have so many fans in Germany and South America?
• allative: Lähetin mun suomalaisille kavereille kutsun. - I sent an invitation to my Finnish friends.
