uudestaan - uudelleen - taas

The difference between uudelleen and uudestaan is something that my advanced students ask often - and every time I show them this Kielitohtori page. The difference is tiny, but it is there:

Uudestaan is again, similarly.

  • Anteeksi, mutta voisitko sanoa uudestaan? - I'm sorry, but could you repeat? (Say exactly the same thing you just said.)
  • Ja uudestaan! Vielä kolme kierrosta! - And again! Three more rounds! (Just keep repeating the same routine.)

Uudelleen is again, but differently.

  • Kirjoita tämä kappale uudelleen. - Rewrite this chapter. (Make it better.)
  • Maista uudelleen ja sano, mitä ajattelet. - Taste again and say what you think. (I assume you'll say something else than before.)

Taas is just again.

  • Sä olet taas myöhässä! - You're late again!
  • Mulla on taas pää kipeä. - I have a headache again.

About the author of this blog:

My name is Hanna Männikkölahti, and I am a native Finn who gives private lessons via Skype and simplifies books into easy Finnish. Please leave a comment, if you have something to ask about Finnish. If you are a woman, you can join my women's weekend in Finnish at the end of April. I also have a mini course for those who are going to the Yki exam.

Ooooh. Cool, I had been using these somewhat interchangeably. Good topic

Good grief! I have never come to think of this. And I am a native speaker & linguist.

Niinpä! :) Mä joudun tarkistamaan tämän asian tuolta Kielitohtori-sivulta aika usein. Ja joskus kielikorva sanoo, että ne tarkoittaa ihan samaa. Varmaan riippuu murteistakin. Ehkä. :)
