How to stay in Finnish

I have noticed lately that many of my students use the verb pysyä or jäädä when they should say olla yötä or just olla. Here are examples of pysyä, jäädä, olla yötä and olla.

Pysyä

  • Pysy tässä. Älä mene minnekään. - Stay here. Don't go anywhere.
  • Pysy terveenä! - Stay healthy!
  • Pysy kotona. - Keep staying at home.

Jäädä

  • Muut menivät elokuviin, mutta minä jäin kotiin. - Others went to the movies but I stayed home.
  • Jää kotiin. - Stay home.
  • En halua jäädä yksin. - I don't want to be left alone.
  • Read my post about jäädä and jättää.

Olla yötä

  • Olimme yötä ihanassa hotellissa. - We stayed in a lovely hotel.
  • Missä sinä olit yötä? - Where did you spend the night?
  • Read my post about staying overnight in Finnish.

Olla

  • Olin koko päivän kotona. - I stayed home all day. (Viettää is also possible.)
  • Olin koko yön metsässä. - I spent all night in the forest. (Viettää is also possible.)
  • Read my post about viettää and other verbs.
