How to open and close in Finnish

Here's a post about opening and closing in Finnish. Please contact me, if you are interested in private lessons for yourself or for a small group. You can read more about my private teaching in www.privatefinnishlessons.com.

Avata is to open.

  • Minä avaan ikkunan. - I open the window.
  • Minä avasin oven. - I opened the door.
  • Kuka on avannut tämän paketin? - Who has opened this package?

To close is either sulkea or laittaa kiinni. Use sulkea when you are talking about browsers, computer windows etc.

  • Minä suljen ikkunan. Minä laitan ikkunan kiinni. - I'll close the window.
  • Älä sulje ovea! Älä laita ovea kiinni! - Don't close the door!
  • Miksi sinä suljit sen? Miksi sinä laitoit sen kiinni? - Why did you close it?
  • En minä sulkenut sitä. En minä laittanut sitä kiinni. - I didn't close it.

To be open or closed:

  • Kauppa on auki. - The shop is open.
  • Kauppa on kiinni / suljettu. - The shop is closed.
