Talking about your partner in Finnish

How to refer to your present and past partners in Finnish? Here's a list of different words you can choose from.

2. aviopuoliso
3. avomies
4. avopuoliso
5. avovaimo
6. eksä
7. ihastus
8. kihlattu
9. kumppani
10. mies
11. miespuolinen ystävä
12. miesystävä
13. morsian
14. naispuolinen ystävä
15. naisystävä
16. nyksä
17. partneri
18. poikaystävä
19. puoliso
20. rakas
21. rakastaja, rakastajatar
22. salarakas
23. sulhanen
24. säätö
25. tyttöystävä
26. vaimo
27. yhden illan juttu

1. aviomies - a husband, often just mies.
2. aviopuoliso - a spouse (married)
3. avomies - a common-law husband (live together without being married) 
4. avopuoliso - a common-law spouse
5. avovaimo - a common-law wife
6. eksä - an ex anything (entinen is the adjective)
7. ihastus - a crush 
8. kihlattu - a person that you are engaged to
9. kumppani - a partner, sounds a bit mysterious
10. mies - a husband or any grown up man that you are romantically involved with
11. miespuolinen ystävä - a male friend
12. miesystävä - a man that you are romantically involved with. Older than poikaystävä. 
13. morsian - a bride, a fiancée
14. naispuolinen ystävä - a female friend
15. naisystävä - a woman that you are romantically involved with. Older than tyttöystävä.
16. nyksä - your current (nykyinen) partner as opposed to eksä.
17. partneri - a partner, sounds a bit mysterious and not used so much. 
18. poikaystävä - a boyfriend
19. puoliso - a spouse (Check out my post about puoli!)
20. rakas - a loved one
21. rakastaja, rakastajatar - a lover, a mistress
22. salarakas - a secret lover or a mistress
23. sulhanen - a groom, a fiancé
24. säätö - a person with whom you have something complicated going on
25. tyttöystävä - a girlfriend
26. vaimo - a wife
27. yhden illan juttu - a one night stand

Words you might also hear depending on the speaker's dialectal background: 

• ukko, äijä, isäntä (men)
• akka, eukko, muija, emäntä (women)

Be very careful with these ones. These are neutral or sweet words to some people, but to many they are just awful.
